At various times, artists have experimented with holes in the picture plane. A Rauschenberg collage in the Cleveland Museum has a hole in it through which the museum wall can be seen; the wall spot becomes integrated with the composition of the collage. In like manner, Mogensen’s work depends upon functioning of the wall as a compositional element. Within a two-color format, Mogensen has gone about as far as one can go in the direction of the nocanvas canvas. Each piece in this show consists of vari-shaped rectangles of stretched canvas, painted in a uniform color. The rectangles are placed against the wall with spaces of from 7” to 24” between them. The white space created by the wall functions as ‘lines’ or ‘stripes.’ The canvas rectangles function as ‘field. (Bykert, March 4-30)—P.S.
