April 1974
The contrast of thin to thick paint provided the visual interest in Peter Bradley’s recent paintings. On top of his stained and/or thinly painted canvases, Bradley added thick, stroke-like areas of acrylic medium; in Mass Ratio 2 (1974), for example, the green and brown-orange of the stain were matched in the pigmented stroke of medium. In Mass Ratio 1 (1974), the medium was pigmented in hues different than those of the canvas. Another variation was exemplified by Wulfenite (1973), in which the canvas and medium areas were sprayed with paint, providing a relief-like quality to the surface. (Andre Emmerich Downtown, Feb 2-20)
