Modern Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Mark Flood. This is the American artist’s second solo show with Modern Art.

Since the early 1980s, Mark Flood has been making and exhibiting work that critiques and appropriates images and identities from art-world and popular consumer cultures. Over the past thirty years, Flood has produced paintings, collages, performances, videos, and sculpture.

This exhibition at Modern Art comprises new paintings from three distinct bodies of work. One series reimagines the paintings of Mark Rothko as original works that use digital technologies in their making to explore issues such as colour, scale and form. There are aged paintings’, which are hand-painted corporate logos on plaster and burlap and affected with fading, cracking and the look of disintegration. Too, there is a body of new lace paintings’ — willfully aesthetic canvases impressed with colourfully painted patterns of decorative lace.

Mark Flood was born in 1957 in Houston, TX, USA, where he continues to live and work. He studied at Rice University, Houston, graduating in 1981. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he worked in relative obscurity, rarely showing outside Texas. In 2014 Flood’s work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum of St Louis, MO, USA, and in 2016 his work will be the subject of a solo survey exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston.
