Woody De Othello
Cool Composition
Art Basel Miami Beach
Meridians M32
Presented by Karma and Jessica Silverman Gallery

Woody De Othello’s Cool Composition is a giant bronze fan, whose anthropomorphism suggests a spectrum of emotional states. Born and raised in Miami to a family of Haitian descent, Othello is fascinated by African “Nkisi,” a belief system in which objects are inhabited by spirits. In an age of global warming, a towering fan may provide solace and escape, but this one also breathes and sighs. It is keen to divulge a secret, share its wisdom, perhaps even proselytize or prophesize.

Born in 1991, Othello has BFA from Florida Atlantic University and an MFA from the California College of Arts in San Francisco. Othello’s work has been featured in three recent biennials: “FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial” (at Akron Art Museum); “Bay Area Now 8” (at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco) and the 33rd Ljublijana Biennial in Slovenia. His solo show at the San Jose Museum of Art opened November 1, 2019. Othello lives and works in Oakland, CA.
